House 38- The Sibling Fashion Duo

It all started in their childhood home.... House 38.
House 38 was started officially in August 2011 (unofficially in 2010) by two sisters Sinmi & Damola Araoye. The idea to start their own clothing line was birthed when both sisters found themselves wanting clothes they couldn't find anywhere and so started making their own clothes. Soon after, they progressed to making clothes for their family and friends and House 38 was born.
“We basically wanted to fill a gap in the closet of the working woman for multifunctional clothes.” They said.

Together, these sisters design their clothes to be stylish enough to awe the client and comfortable enough to fit into day-to-day life. In their own words, they create clothes that stand the test of time through the use of classic cuts and fits that celebrate the feminine form.
House 38 presently consists of 3 ranges: PRIM by House 38, the younger and more affordable range; House 38 Heritage, where traditional fabrics are reinvented into modern silhouettes and House 38 Core Collection, the most creative expression of style using luxury fabrics and embellishments. They also make use of a wide range of fabrics- Ankara, aso-Oke, Chiffon and George fabric.

In an interview with Gidilounge, the sisters said:

“We focus on details that would help enhance our craft and enhance the body. The items are beautifully made to celebrate our heritage, and bond as sisters. Our clothes are simple and classy, but with impact. It’s ready to wear that’s easy to wear!"
I personally have loved House 38 clothes for a long time now. I  truly believe these sisters are truly talented. I have no doubt that they will achieve their dream of becoming a well defined and easily recognizable brand and to have their clothes stocked in major stores around Africa and the world in the coming years.

House 38 clothes can now be purchased on:

Chef Fregz- The New-age Nigerian Chef!

Gbubemi Fregene  or as we know him 'Chef Fregz' definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to food!

Having loved cooking from a very young age, he decided to turn his passion into a career and become a chef, adopting the name Chef Fregz. Gbubemi must have certainly been doing something right as in early 2010, he caught the attention of the prestigious culinary institute Le Cordon Bleu Paris and was awarded a place which he refers to as an "opportunity of two life times" ; where he received a world class culinary training and learnt the clasical French cooking Techniques. Talking about his what he loved the most about Le Cordon Bleu, Gbubemi says:

"The best part was going to a place where people spoke the language as you and you didn't feel weird having a one hour conversation about searing protein properly, what restaurant had the best soufflé, how you burnt you hand in class, foie gras and how happy you are when you smell garlic sautéing. I felt lost at home with my craft and Learnt so much from great chefs"

Chef Fregz, whose first inspirations were his Mum Ewule Fregene and Aunty Rosalind, draws inspiration from Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson and Adebola Adeshina.  He currently  hosts Chef Fregz™ Special  which runs bi-monthly at the Get Arena, Oniru and also runs a private chef and catering outfit for small numbers. He doesn't exactly "specialise" in any particular cuisine as he cooks for such a wide audience but  however likes playing with Asian and Indian influences a lot. He hopes to open his own restaurant some day (Hopefully soon!) and says it would be different and greatly innovative.

A man of many talents, Gbebumi is also a columnist on Bella Naija website where he writes about all things pertaining to food.

Studio of Modé - The 21st Century Art!

Earlier this year, The Academy of Art University graduate, Mode Aderinokun, started what we now know as Studio of Modé. Mode is most commonly known for her amazing one-of-a-kind iPad skins and iPhone and blackberry cases (see pictures below) but also makes custom-made portraits, her "own" original artworks( acrylic, watercolor and oil paintings) and designs tote bags and table runners.
When I asked Mode what the inspiration behind Studio of modé was, she said:

"Nothing really inspired me to start my own business; I couldn't go into a company to do what I’m doing because there’s no one doing it. I just think it was the next step to take."

Mode has surprisingly only been drawing and painting for about 6-7 and 3 years respectively and says that being an artist is more than just talent; it involves hard work and a lot of practice . She describes herself as more of an impressionist artist who likes to add a little bit of her style to her art. Talking about her hopes and dreams for her business, Mode hopes more people come to know about Studio of Modé and it pushes boundaries.

I (Tosin) am a huge fan of Mode's work and just got my very own Kike blue iPhone 4 cover a few weeks a ago which I love very dearly. I remember when I first came across her work, I was really impressed and thought ( and still think) she is so talented!  Mode was also sort of featured in my first post (check it out here)

Beauty Boudoir- Merging the worlds of Beauty and Finance.

As a little girl, the beautiful Imelda Ladebo, the brain behind Beauty Boudoir, loved two things: watching her mum dress up and going to the bank with her parents; which comes as little surprise her love for beauty, makeup and her recent BSc Honours degree in Accounting & Business Management from Brunel University. After working as a freelance makeup artist for 4 years, Imelda bagged a diploma in Beauty and makeup earlier this year and right after, Beauty Boudoir (http://www.beauty-boudoir.net/) was born. Imelda also currently holds the position as the beauty editor of Sideview magazine (http://sideviewmagazine.com/). When asked what exactly her job entails, she replied:

" The title is a lot more glamorous than the actual job. For each issue I'm responsible for writing beauty articles relevant to the particular issue; planning photoshoots; working alongside the editor in chief in reviewing photos and articles to publish; editing articles sent in from our beauty contributors, sampling new beauty products that hit the market and reviewing them (both for the styleme-up blog and sideview magazine). It's a lot of work but it's also fun because I get to go to events, meet amazing people and try out new products!"

Imelda specialises in bridal, fashion, commercial, editorial and makeup for other ocassions and is currently focusing fully on being a makeup artist. She explains that there are so many barriers she wants to break and so many things she would like to introduce and explore. Her words to us are to "stay tuned" and "watch this space!".
Here are a few pictures from Imelda's portforlio:

Great work Imelda!! We at 'The Publicist' wish you Good luck in all your endeavors!

Slippers by kene - Giving slippers an African touch.

After completing her law degree at the University of Bristol , Kene Rapu, inspired by her love for fashion, eye for detail and creative nature started her own footwear line called Slippers by Kene in October 2011. Slippers by kene are made with different styles of fabric such as ankara, adire and aso oke and come in the variety of colours and designs, giving every customer a wide range to choose from. Kene currently makes slippers for women but will branching out into the male sector with the introduction of her men's slippers line in a few weeks. When asked what her plans and dream were for her footwear line, Kene said:

"I believe my brand will play a role in the growth of the local Nigerian industry through the use of locally sourced materials and workmanship, providing jobs and revenue for craftsmen who may not otherwise have a steady income flow. I also see Slippersbykene becoming a household name; every lady should own a pair!"

In addition to being entrepreneur, Kene currently studies at the Nigerian Law school and is also a part time model.
Slippers by Kene can now be purchased on Kene's website, by leaving a message on her facebook group or by contacting Kene herself (links and details below).
